RIP: Personal Responsibility

Let’s take a look at an article I found from the Washington Post. I should point out something most regular readers of this blog would already know: I am in no way a big fan of El Presidente Jorge Arbusto. However, the author of this piece from the WaPo is disingenious in her efforts to blame Bush for her lack of personal responsibility.

What Happens When There Is No Plan B?

I am a 42-year-old happily married mother of two elementary-schoolers. My husband and I both work, and like many couples, we’re starved for time together. One Thursday evening this past March, we managed to snag some rare couple time and, in a sudden rush of passion, I failed to insert my diaphragm.

Let’s look at this again: The conservative politics of the Bush administration forced me to have an abortion I didn’t want.” and “…in a sudden rush of passion, I failed to insert my diaphragm.”

So, George W. Bush, President of the United States of America, is directly responsible for the author and her husband failing to take personal responisbility for thier lives and their choices.

Let’s look a little further, shall we?

The next morning, after getting my kids off to school, I called my ob/gyn to get a prescription for Plan B, the emergency contraceptive pill that can prevent a pregnancy — but only if taken within 72 hours of intercourse. As we’re both in our forties, my husband and I had considered our family complete, and we weren’t planning to have another child, which is why, as a rule, we use contraception. I wanted to make sure that our momentary lapse didn’t result in a pregnancy.

The receptionist, however, informed me that my doctor did not prescribe Plan B. No reason given. Neither did my internist. The midwifery practice I had used could prescribe it, but not over the phone, and there were no more open appointments for the day. The weekend — and the end of the 72-hour window — was approaching.

Ok… After failing to insert her diaphram, or having her husband wear a condom, she went for “Plan B” – the “morning-after pill”, yet her doctor didn’t issue that particular prescription. It should also be noted that at no point did the author attempt to consult another physician. Again, I fail to see how George W. Bush, President of the United States of America, bears any culpability in this.

I felt sick. Although I’ve always been in favor of abortion rights, this was a choice I had hoped never to have to make myself. When I realized the seriousness of my predicament, I became angry. I knew that Plan B, which could have prevented it, was supposed to have been available over the counter by now. But I also remembered hearing that conservative politics have held up its approval.

Ah. So Plan B was supposed to be “over-the-counter” by now”? According to whom? Perhaps the author of this diatribe should have done her research. If she had, she would have noticed that a number of women have died after taking “plan B” and the FDA was looking into the cause of these death before approving a medication for over-the-counter use.

Nah. That sounds too much like common sense to me.

Apparently, one of the concerns is that ready availability of Plan B could lead teenage girls to have premarital sex. Yet this concern — valid or not — wound up penalizing an over-the-hill married woman for having sex with her husband. Talk about the law of unintended consequences.

Here’s a hint, woman: Condoms are $5 for a 12-pack. And, as previously mentioned, you already had contraceptive measure you failed to use. Yet, somehow, George W. Bush, President of the United States of America, is directly responsible for your pregnancy and subsequent abortion.

Welcome to the New United States, where one man you’ve never met is now directly accountable for everything that goes wrong in your life. Personal Responsibility need not apply.

Misha hits this one, too.

Huh, isn’t Planned Parenthood avalible for just this sort of “planned parenting”?

PP is only concerned with killing babies, not preventing them.
