RIP

I’ve often said that I am a geek of immense proportions.  In my relatively short lifetime, I’ve seen all manner of technological wonders.  One of the most recent was the unmanned exploration of Mars, our next-door neighbor.

In the last few months, the Phoenix Mars Lander has provided a tremendous wealth of information about Mars; information that helps to improve our understanding of the planet that has fascinated generations of geeks like myself.

Sadly, or maybe not so sadly, the Phoenix Mars Lander has gone offline.  It lasted far longer than anyone expected, and in that time has continued to provide a wealth of data.  Much like the aging Hubble Space Telescope, the Phoenix Lander is a testament to the ingenuity of people who are dedicated to their tasks.

It is my hope that we will soon set some boots on Mars and explore this enigmatic world.  But I hope there is no intent in bringing Phoenix home; it should stay where it is as a monument to the hopes and dreams of the scientists that put it there.
